A girly paleo future

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Another girlgeek dinner means another speaker and this time it was me. Bnox asked me to come and talk about paleo-fururism. Not that I’m an expert on that subject but I guess she thought my love for science-fiction and all things futuristic was good enough.

The only link I had with paleo futursm was the blog by Matt Novak. Lucky for me the guy has collected lots of material over the years and owns by now the biggest and most interesting website in this field. Matt was also so kind to help me out with the keynote.

I started making a really serious and theoretical presentation but just a few hours before the happening I decided to make another one. One that wouldn’t take to much of the girls time and was more fun so I made it on what futurists thought about girls. I was glad I did this because that one was way more fun, the audience was amused and didn’t get bored. Unfortunately I managed to insult one blond with a joke (for which I’m sorry).

It was big fun to do and a very cool subject to research. If you want to know more about it visit the blog or try Matts booktip: 1999: Our hopeful Future by Victor Cohn. Slides after the (more…)

To bad you guys didn’t drink that much, I was looking forward to a real life Coyote Ugly scene on the one-agency bar…

Anyhow, it’s going to be a great party we’re expecting a nice blend of people. And I would like to see some of you people there.

Also, if you feel like warming up on Friday you can join the preparty and see Trip in action.

Dear Róisín,
Some time ago Reggie promised to take you on a date. But he didn’t show up… Instead, he chose to work on some of his fancy clients over having a great night with you.
Róisín, you deserve better a better man, a man who would put everything aside for you. You know me, altho I have some fancy clients myself I’ll make sure to have time for you.
I saw you yesterday being fabulous as always in the AB and oh me, oh my… you gave me a tickle in a way I thought no woman could tickle me, I feel overpowered.
Face it Róisín, our chromosomes match and Reggie didn’t even bother to show up yesterday.

Also: can I use the outfit in this picture? My boyfriend (soon to be yours too) is throwing a party and I don’t have an outfit yet. We’ll put you on the guestlist.

Swallowing Chewing Gum?

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Picture 1.png

Again, something lots of us think about but never really bother to ask. Luckily this world is blessed with bored scientist answering great scientific questions like, “What happens if you swallow a chewing gum?” (via)
As a child my grandmother always told me that it would get stuck in my a++hole resulting in toilet-drama. Other people seem scare each other with the idea that it stays in your body for 7 years. (noticed just now that my grandmother is talented for scaring kids)

But in reality there is no risk… this is how a scientist describes it: “It probably passes through slower than most foodstuffs, but eventually the normal housekeeping waves in the digestive tract will sort of push it through, and it will come out pretty unmolested.”
(nicely put in words, don’t you think?)

All the next times I’ll be chewing gum I will think “shall I swallow or spit?”, I’ll be reminded of this and my grandmother with the a++hole story. I don’t know what that will do to me…

Anyhow, some more chewing gum links:

Monday morning

Almost every morning when I wake up I don’t feel like getting up. It’s cold outside the bed! I pull the laptop under the sheets and read some feeds, somehow it’s easier to face the day when you start with some internet.
Just a moment ago I spotted this image, I saw it somewhere before, saved it but couldn’t remember where it came from.
I think it really illustrates the Monday-morning-feeling I have…

Wall deco

Lately I’ve been keeping an eye on wall decoration, my walls are just plain white. I think they could use something, nothing big, just a smart detail.

This is my shortlist of potential places to shop:
A better tomorrow wallstickers
AIKO prints
Blik wallstickers
Tonky wallstickers
And surface view wallpaper

And then miss Ubiqitous came up with something, a quote on the wall. In most cases I find quotes on the wall a bit boring, but not this time.
-Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast- Oscar Wilde

I can’t agree more. Nice quote Dr. Pew, what quote would you recommend for my place?

Sabbatical entertainment and insights

As most of you know, I’ve been between jobs since 2 months. And with These Days missing I found myself with 3 months pay and a whole lot of time… I wasn’t ready for work so I spoiled myself and got some quiet time.
And it was great!, being on Sabbath literally throws you in that other dimension, the one where work is optional.
I discovered it is fun to be alone, I had the chance to watch series and read work-unrelated books. And since I’m planning to come back and start sharing again I decided to share some of the best distractions I had.

Ugly betty: The best discovery of this summer (picture).
Betty her looks really don’t work for her but she has the ambition for two. This ugly duck wants to work in journalism and picks up a job for the fashion magazine ‘Mode’ where she meets lots of fashion cliché people in a gay Star Trek environment. Sounds a bit like The Devil wears Prada but it is totally different because of all the twists and marvelous one-liners. It’s 23 episodes of pure drama, comedy, mystery, farce, camp, soap opera, and satire and has been renewed for a second season.

Earth final conflict:series from star trek creator Gene Roddenberry
Aliens have made first contact with humans and saved the world from hunger and war. They call themselves our companions and share their technology with us.
This series is full of interesting novel technologic concepts and cultural references. I’m glad I got around to see it, my sci-fi knowledge expanded again and I picked up some fancy ideas.

Eleanor Rigby: a Douglas Coupland Novel
I really like the characters Douglas portraits in his books, they always look upon life in a original and funny way. This time It is about Lizz, an overweight ginger woman who can be very funny even when luck isn’t always on her side. The book totally pulled me on the emotional rollercoaster, I almost cried and I had a few good laughs. Emotional stuff is something I like to avoid but this time it was different… Can’t wait to read The Gum Thief.

Hyperspace: A scientific odyssey through parallel universes, time warp and the 10th dimension.
A farewell gift from These Days and a good one too. The book describes every detail about modern physics (the one they don’t teach at school).
While reading it your worldview really changes and in between reading you can’t stop thinking about it, it rocks your mind! Now I can finally explain you without any problems the strings theory. Those who saw What the bleep do we know may find this book to be more down to earth and thus far more scientific and less esoterical.

Conclusion: Some might say I’ve spoiled 2 months but I like to think of it as 2 months of mind-expansion…
Some would be reading marketing-books and other professional content but being away from all that showed me that all those things are narrowing your mind and make you lose the big picture. People tend to drown in all that marketing twitter and when you ignore these things for a moment, you’ll notice that the hypes that we, digital people throw ourselves upon are just concepts that give us the fake feeling that we’re in control, making us uninventive and dull…

The Indestructible LADA Niva

What she says…
it is probably the only car in the world that would survive me sitting behind the wheel.

Ine: the wrong thing with 4×4 is the eco-factor, luckily you can buy the Niva with LPG-tank and adjusted motor.
Another nice car in the old fiat Panda (DIY paper model)… same genre and almost indestructible

Everybody plays songs in their heads, songs they’ve heard earlier or songs that a triggered by thinking about something. There is nothing strange with humming songs, at least if they do not include Jimmy Somerville. Lately I notice myself humming the Bronski beat hit collection. It all started with “Don’t leave me this way” and last weekend I got stuck on “smalltown boy” so i added a remix on my myspace. Somehow the Bronski beats put me in a state of bliss but it is hard to control myself on the humming. Humming Somerville’s voice is just strange.

When I’m alone at home I tend to sing along with the music and mostly I don’t care about how it sounds but still, I just can’t do Somerville, it’s just to strange for me to go that high. Is it my masculinity? This guy on youtube obviously didn’t doubt himself, and so didn’t he or they.
Anyhow, I’m sure my Bronski beat period will fade and hopefully it will not be replaced by some ABBA fever.
