A girly paleo future

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Another girlgeek dinner means another speaker and this time it was me. Bnox asked me to come and talk about paleo-fururism. Not that I’m an expert on that subject but I guess she thought my love for science-fiction and all things futuristic was good enough.

The only link I had with paleo futursm was the blog by Matt Novak. Lucky for me the guy has collected lots of material over the years and owns by now the biggest and most interesting website in this field. Matt was also so kind to help me out with the keynote.

I started making a really serious and theoretical presentation but just a few hours before the happening I decided to make another one. One that wouldn’t take to much of the girls time and was more fun so I made it on what futurists thought about girls. I was glad I did this because that one was way more fun, the audience was amused and didn’t get bored. Unfortunately I managed to insult one blond with a joke (for which I’m sorry).

It was big fun to do and a very cool subject to research. If you want to know more about it visit the blog or try Matts booktip: 1999: Our hopeful Future by Victor Cohn. Slides after the (more…)

Some Flickr old time

Flickr can be so much fun. Tonight I came by this flickr set of vintage book covers. They’re kitsch and most of them are gay themed dirty novels with titles like “the killer queens“, “the gay rebels” and “a man’s affair“. I was quite surprised, I never saw these little book of naughtiness before.
On top of it, when browsing the images I noticed some funny notes by another user. He used the notes as speech bubbles. It seemed like a nice idea to co-create cartoons on flickr so I started to play along and added sime of my own notes. Take a look around, find them and add some. Allow yourself to have some
gay old innocent play-time.

Wall deco

Lately I’ve been keeping an eye on wall decoration, my walls are just plain white. I think they could use something, nothing big, just a smart detail.

This is my shortlist of potential places to shop:
A better tomorrow wallstickers
AIKO prints
Blik wallstickers
Tonky wallstickers
And surface view wallpaper

And then miss Ubiqitous came up with something, a quote on the wall. In most cases I find quotes on the wall a bit boring, but not this time.
-Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast- Oscar Wilde

I can’t agree more. Nice quote Dr. Pew, what quote would you recommend for my place?

do you know our home galaxy?

milkyway_cobe.jpg

Some days ago I noticed a friend having a top-view of our very own milky way as his pc-wallpaper. I asked him if he had any clue where our solar system could be, he didn’t. I was shocked that he observes that image every day without ever wondering where our planet might be..
It seems that many don’t even have an idea on how our home galaxy looks, they don’t get beyond our solar system.

So for those of you who would get lost in space! Get a better idea of our place in space in 5 minutes: (if the scientists are correct…)
360 panorama from our point of view, Image from the top (diameter 100,000), side and top
video animation, video about the centre (we live approx 20.000 light-years from the centre)
Interactive 3D simulation (my favorite!) Also read to other pages for a speed course.
And the wikipedia

Why?: I’m the kind of person that gets lost in a medium hotel, having an idea where I am in space gives me a relaxed feeling. It might do the same with you.

Also: in a few billion years our galaxy will collapse with the andromeda galaxy (video simulation). It seems like a cool event but I guess these things happens all the time out there.

Advertising is Horny, Long Live Advertising

During the last year or so, I’ve been compiling innovative and surprising communication ideas and cases from all over the world. I’ve categorized over 200 cases in 8 different techniques, and packaged them in a glossy, illustrated book titled ‘Advertising is Dead, Long Live Advertising’. In Germany, the book is published by Stiebner, in the Netherlands by BIS publishers, in Belgium by Lannoo and in the rest of the world by Thames & Hudson. If you want to get a rollercoaster view on the most surprising, off-beat, off-the-wall & innovative communication campaigns of the last 6 years, this is the book to buy!

As the author, I was most proud to find out that the book was already distributed in a highly erotic book shop in the center of London (don’t ask me what I did there). I must admit there is partial nudity in the book (another reason for purchase!).

Timeshifted lusting

Today Fenster showed me an article on NU.nl (English on the daily mail) . The article talked about a guy who bought a laptop on eBay from a guy called Amir. The buyer received a dodgy laptop, he wanted a refund. When that didn’t happen he got mad and wanted revenge.
The eBay avenger pulled the HD out to see what was on it and found a lot of Amir’s personal information.
He dedicated a website to it and posted some of the data and pictures there.

The pictures of the legs that Amir took with his phone surprised me the most, the avenger claims that their were about 90 on the HD.
Almost every phone has a small camera on it and since these phones are an ubiquity nobody thinks about what the people are doing with it.

Amir obviously enjoyed taking pictures of female legs (secretly), I makes me wander what other pervs are collecting with their phones… what kinds of collections are out there?
I’m absolutely sure Amir isn’t the only kinky guy in town and that lots of people are doing this, one of them are the famous panty pullers.

When trend watchers saw all the 9/11 bombing images created by citizens they created the word citizen journalism, with what name would they come up for these other kinky citizen photographers? Maybe Timeshifted Lusting?
Also: The story goes on a blog dedicated to this story.

The last stand by me

The X-men Hype started, numerous of blogs are already talking about it and I’m looking forward to see this one on the big screen (24/05).
We have some sci-fi and marvel fans down at the office and we couldn’t resist making our own little friendly spoof for this blockbuster. The idea was to pull X-men back into its roots and make a classic marvel with the new images.
Our biggest marvel-fan came up with a name and story: “The last Stand by me” is a fusion between “The Last Stand” and “Stand by me” that way our marvel became a roadmovie.
It all started out as a rejected concept for a client, quotes like “you can go all animal on my ass” and “well that’s what you get from wearing those SM suits all the time” are to blame I think :D . We couldn’t just kill it and that’s why we started playing with it on our own terms, outside of our business hours and whitout ou boss’s appoval ;-) .
The story is told by Frasier Crane who plays Beast in the last stand… we hope you like it, if so DIGG it.

I was on flickr browsing through some pictures, when I was struck by a small detail. This picture shows two people having a drink & a bite on a terrace in Brussels. Below the picture, some people, probably friends, have commented. On the picture itself, somebody has made a note that he or she knows the person in the background. A nice visual metaphor for the ultimate interlinked picture world that Flickr has been able to create.

Adicolor is complete

In this time where sneakers are a ubiquity we would doubt on how one could still find a way to get our attention. Adidas did it with revival of their 1883 concept, they grabbed my attention for some time with their online campaign for their DIY concept Adicolor. The idea is that you buy a limited edition white shoe and that you paint it yourself. The premium kit is limited edition and if you want one you can buy one on eBay (biddings up to $450)
They have a collection for every color but they also sell spraycans and markers to design you shoes (if you have other plans for the $450).
The podcast (video) features a series of short movies. These movies were all directed by different artists whose objective was to picture the true essence of a color. Not an easy job if you ask me, colors can bring up so many ideas. Green can be something else for me as it is for you. That’s why this podcast kept me going, I was always curious for what I would see in the next one, even when the last one disappointed me. Every movie is really different, you can’t compare the one with the other…

I think Adicolor delivered a real video document on color, the whole experience made me wander how I could paint a sneaker that represents a piece of who I am. They have collections for every color but they also sell spraycans and markers to design you shoes.
