Sick of Tag clouds

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

I need to say it! I can’t hold it! I need to get it off my chest.

Before I insult anyone or sound like a pretentious web-know-it-all:
I’ve been guilty of doing some amateur information architecture and in that time I made many mistakes (believe me, there are pro’s who almost killed me for that). I love to be able to make mistakes, they deliver their own insights and ideas. So, let me be clear about this, I’m all about experimenting and playing around with novel concepts but their is a time to look back and learn from what we’ve done.

As the title suggests my rant is about tagclouds (or weighted lists). Like many others I was seduced by these cool looking things and being an enthusiastic person I used them. But some time ago I started realizing something about them and I seem to be on my own about it.

They’re a lazy solution and cheap-ass excuse for a navigation!
Never use them if you want your users to navigate though your tags. Really, check your analytics, people rarely use it.
I love the concept of weighted tags but the difference in size makes the tags very hard to read or scan, try it, it gives you migraines.
There are many other ways to navigate tags. What about oldskool alphabetical dropdowns + numbers to show the amount of items? I’m sure those rich-interface-flex-guru-types also have some great alternatives.
Using them to make your website look 2.0 is also not done (I’m not going into the 2.0-look thing, that could be a rant on it’s own). FYI, they have been around for some time now and they lost all of their novelty value, it’s as hip and bold like wearing jeans in church these days. At least try to do something new and make new mistakes.

I have to admit, they’re not all bad. They’re great to quickly “feel” the subjects on a blog or other sites that have no fixed topic. Having one for that reason is OK, (and while it’s there the tags might as well be clickable). Just know that no person in their right mind really “navigates” on these random-topic sites.

Anyway, a tag cloud is a data visualization thing, not a navigation thing.

Advertising is Horny, Long Live Advertising

During the last year or so, I’ve been compiling innovative and surprising communication ideas and cases from all over the world. I’ve categorized over 200 cases in 8 different techniques, and packaged them in a glossy, illustrated book titled ‘Advertising is Dead, Long Live Advertising’. In Germany, the book is published by Stiebner, in the Netherlands by BIS publishers, in Belgium by Lannoo and in the rest of the world by Thames & Hudson. If you want to get a rollercoaster view on the most surprising, off-beat, off-the-wall & innovative communication campaigns of the last 6 years, this is the book to buy!

As the author, I was most proud to find out that the book was already distributed in a highly erotic book shop in the center of London (don’t ask me what I did there). I must admit there is partial nudity in the book (another reason for purchase!).

Bronze Lion on eBay

Last week, mortierbrigade -the agency where I work- has won a Bronze Lion for eBay at the Cannes International Advertising Festival. And off course, we wanted to share our prize with the eBay community. So we put the lion for sale on eBay. For those who didn’t won a Lion yet and wouldn’t mind having one on their chimney, you still have about two days to place your bets.

Frasier cast in Star trek Voyager

After 3rd Rock from the Sun I was in the mood for some more 90’s sitcom. Frasier seemed like a good idea.
Well I searched it on Youtube and I found this clip. It’s hilarious!

While having auditions for the new Star Trek Voyager (1997) the whole cast of Frasier comes by for a screening… It is needles to say that this is going to be nice.
The audio sync wears of near the end but it doesn’t make it less funny.

Some more star trek:
Star trek karaoke: Commercial for reruns of Star Trek 2.0 (TNG)
Spock Quotations: They will come in handy
Khaaan: euhm…
Trek Passions: Sci fi-dating service

Educate your people

Monday, January 16th, 2006

In my work I often propose things that are not really mainstream yet. Most of the time colleagues tell me that my idea’s are to “underground” for the mainstream. Being an internet professional I see it as one of my tasks to educate users on new possibilities. This is something every internet professional should do. Only this way they’re able to do something back for the internet.
BBC is showing her visitors how to use RSS… I proposed something similar for two other projects that i’ve been working on last week. If my colleagues are questioning my work again i just tell them “look what BBC did”.
this is my feed, please use it.

10 Web Trends That Should Die in 2006

A happy new year!
Most people have new years resolutions and so has Philipp Lenssen on blog.outer-court.com.

Some of the things he wishes not to hear or see in the next year:

“We have art content, so let’s create an artistic navigation.”

“Let’s treat the mobile web as a separate entity.”

“Let’s do a traditional homepage for our company.”

“Let’s have a tiny font that looks better.”
